Asbestos was once seen as “the miracle mineral” and was widely exploited for its properties of chemical stability, high tensile strength, low thermal conductivity, sound attenuating capabilities etc. Asbestos is also widely distributed and has been commercially mined in over 40 countries. This resulted in the extensive use of asbestos in buildings, associated engineering services, and in all types of products.
Unfortunately, one of its most useful properties, that of splitting into fine fibres, makes asbestos very damaging to health. Now that its detrimental effects are fully appreciated we are left having to either remove the material under strictly controlled conditions or manage asbestos in-situ to prevent damage to peoples’ health.
